Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere: Intersections

The Intersections series is comprised of two sets of 10 C-Prints – intermixed.

The first set captures various environments in transition from rural landscape to suburban sprawl. Of particular interest is the speed at which these environments become populated. Many of the residents have relocated from cultures around the world and have moved into these environments long before construction is complete. Many of the streets have yet to be named and temporary mailboxes line the streets. In this sense, these environments are in the process of both physical and cultural development. These images are titled with the names given to each subdivision depicted. For example: Lakelands, Trinity Commons, and Fletcher’s Meadow.

The second set of images depicts blank street signs on colors from Martha Stewart’s Signature Series. These images are titled with the names of two proposed and rejected street names followed by the name of the paint color used. For example: Pollywog/Redman (Enamelware), Friends/Babyburn (Pink Luster) and Choiceland/Islamabad (Sparkling Brook). The proposed/rejected names are taken from an official document published by the Region of Peel –which includes the City of Brampton. It is important to mention that developers as well as citizens living within the region are responsible for proposing street names. In this sense, the proposed, rejected and existing street names work together in creating a collective representation of the perceptions and desires of those developing and living within these communities. The ways in which many of these names relate to historical and contemporary notions of suburbia are integral to gaining insight into the complex nature of these environments.
